Mary L- Your Host

Mary L (manager, operator, creator and host of Locals.)

Mary L. Martin is the creator, operator, manger and host of the Show “Locals” in part with co-op radio 102.7fm.

It all started when she was eight years old and curious of what she wanted to be when she got older. She loved sports and knew she wanted a job in sports, but wasn’t sure of what. So she would study every single kind of job there was in sports when others thought she should be just a normal kid and not think about work yet. They thought she was too young.
As the only triplet to survive, she knew she had to make a mark in this world as she was the only one left. Since she couldn’t be with her brothers, she thought she had to make them proud of her and work three times as hard for all of them. So since the beginning she had in her head that "work was more important then life." What would work be though if you had no dream? So she started to look into the different jobs until she found something she could do. So she started to do the research, but it wasn’t until she was twelve when she saw what she wanted to do.

While she was watching TV in 1991,

she saw a sportscaster who was on a TV show called “Sports page” named Dave Randorf.

 Dave Randorf on TSN

When she saw him she knew she wanted to be just like him. She knew she couldn’t be a guy, but it was his personality, sense of humor and voice that grabbed her attention. She thought that would be the coolest job in the world! You get to interview athletes and have the chance to meet them up close as well as getting to ask questions that you always wanted to know. As she learnt about the job more and more, she knew this was what she was meant to do. She got to do everything she loved, write, talk, interview and meet people all at once. So she started to learn everything she could about being a sportscaster.

Even though she found her dream job threw a TV, she knew it just wasn’t her thing. She remembered taking a tour at CKNW and how much she fell in love with the control board. To her it was the coolest thing in the world! So it made her look into radio. Even though she saw Dave on TV, she also loved his radio show on CKNW, so at least she was following his footsteps in some way, she thought. She saw an ad in the paper as co-op radio was looking for volunteers, so she went down to the station and signed up. She would spend her time there for hours threw out the day more than she was at school. She would help out on several different shows, mainly operating the board.
Then she got to do a few shows with Obaa, a show for and by women. Her first show didn’t go to well as she interviewed some friends about sports. Lucky for her, April helped her out. As she was volunteering for theatre under the stars, she asked if she could interview some of the female cast members from Hair. Well she got to do that and she interviewed two of them, Sharon Ong and the other name is a blank for now. (Boy she must be getting old. lol)

Mary thought being behind the board was awesome, but her real passion was being behind the mic and hosting the show. So while she was going to school she got to help out with Obaa. Well life made things harder on Mary as she had to start to work instead of just volunteering once she graduated. So for a few years, Mary had to stop going to co-op radio and actually make money. As she got older she learned how to balance her life and make co-op radio included. So as they moved to a new station, she got in contact with them and was aloud to be back behind the board. After her show of interest, she got to host her own show during the cul de sac which was great for her because she could still work ( as it was a lte night show)and put together a show. After that her show has been going strong for three years and still is. (Please read the Local bio to find more about the show.)
From there she went to Columbia Academy for Broadcasting of the arts and graduated! She knew she was meant to be a broadcaster when she told her fellow students that "every time I’m on the mic it’s the greatest fix in the world. Nothing else can beat that feeling" and when she’s not on the air, she misses it. Now that is just pure love. For awhile she had to put things on hold as she was trying to get her life back on a good path where she could balance her life and do everything she wanted with all the good reasons as well as learning to let go of her brothers. With counseling, The Phantom of the opera and the support of my friends and family, she was able to be at peace with herself and back at full swing behind the mic’! She is still thinking of what she wants to do in radio, but right now she just loves to be on the air. At the beginning she wanted to be a sportscaster, but since it’s all about money and drugs, she doesn’t want to support something that she doesn’t believe in anymore. She’s still a baseball fan, but doesn’t make her life just sports anymore. There’s no such thing as for “the Love of the game.” She would love to host a show and get paid for it, but even if this is all she gets to do, she knows she’s helping out her friends and so she knows that her brothers would be proud.  So just to be on the air is like getting paid and I hope you will enjoy listing to her.

The Phantom of the opera has helped her out threw out her life and so his story is apart of here and if you would like to learn more about The Phantom check out her site www.phantomlover.bravehost.com
